Classic comic book covers: Redrawn by me!
// March 11th, 2010 // Art, Cartoons
So, there’s this great blog called ‘Covered‘ which is basically a place for people to submit their versions of existing comic book covers. I heard about it through my mate Andrew Waugh (check out his recent Planet of the Apes comic, it’s ace) who had some work featured himself.
Anyway, I figured I could go in for a bit of that and submitted the following two pieces. They both got rejected.
Luckily I have my own blog with about two readers (one of which is me) so I can post them here and make myself feel better!

It’s shit these didn’t get through - of the two I submitted only one got through - and not even the one I thought was the best.
I can understand the first one not getting through - it’s sketchy and they always go for coloured ones or at least really worked up black and white ones. But the second one is class - I don’t understand it. Maybe it’s cos the editor is American and doesn’t get the Beano?
Yeah, he didn’t give a specific reason for the first one, only that a high number of submissions arrive weekly and it didn’t get selected (although I figured it would be for similar reasons to what you said), As for the Beano he said it was ‘a little too close to the original’ and was ‘trying to avoid that lately’ .
Oh well, I’ll prob try again soon.
Cheers Waugh…
pah - a likely excuse. He’s had loads on that were exact copies of the orginal and coloured on computers and whatnot. Yours is very similar, but it’s the style you’ve done it in that gives it the charm. it’s mint.
another thing that annoys me is that it clearly states in the ‘rules’ not to spoof the original, but I’ve seen a few that change the speech bubbles to be funny. I would have done that if I thought it was allowed.
end of the day, it’s personal preference I suppose - it’s his blog and he can do what he likes with it.
you should keep trying though - it’s a laugh and challenge.
Cheers man,
yeah your right, I do like the challenge - just gotta keep trying ey! I think I’ll stick with Beano and Asterix though, thought they were good choices as they weren’t on there yet - I’ll have to dig through the collection again to find something good…
